The present invention relates to chewable formulations for delivering nutritional or pharmaceutically active agents to animal targets. A chewable formulation includes a nutritional component or an effective amount of a pharmaceutically active agent, and a plasticizer. Chewable formulations are formed by extrusion, and the formulations are substantially free of unbound water, and no water is added during the manufacturing process. The present invention also relates to a method for producing a storage-stable chewable formulation, wherein said method comprises a nutritional component or an effective amount of a pharmaceutically active agent and a fat, lipid, or fat and lipid to obtain a first composition. In order to obtain a second composition, one or more plasticizers are added to the first composition, and the second composition is heated at a temperature sufficient to melt the fat and lipid.
