PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an antimicrobial agent which can be produced at a low cost, is safe, and is applicable to wide-range application.SOLUTION: The antimicrobial agent includes a polyphenol compound having a catechol skeleton and magnesium oxide. As the polyphenol compound having the catechol skeleton, for example, a flavonoid having the catechol skeleton can be mentioned, and more specifically, luteolin, quercetin, and derivatives of these compounds are mentioned. Furthermore, as the polyphenol compound having the catechol skeleton, for example, rosmarinic acid, chlorogenic acid, and derivatives of these compounds are also mentioned.
