The present invention relates to a method for preparing an infant formula base by means of microfiltration, ultrafiltration and nanofiltration, wherein the milk components are separated into a casein fraction, whey protein fraction and lactose fraction and properly mixed with breast milk. Infant formula bases having an amino acid composition close to the amino acid composition of can be prepared. The present invention provides infant formula formulations having a total protein concentration of about 1.0 to about 1.5% and a β-casein concentration of at least about 11% of the total protein concentration.
