The present invention relates to a milk-derived product that is fermented by lactic acid producing bacteria comprising lactic acid and/or lactate and further comprising: i) at least 6 g lactose per 100 ml nutritional composition and/or at least 40 wt.% lactose based on dry weight of the nutritional composition; ii) iron and iii) 0.2 g to 1.5g non-digestible oligosaccharides per 100 ml nutritional composition and/or at least 1.0 wt.% to 20 wt.% nondigestible oligosaccharides such as galactooligosaccharides or fructooligosaccharides based on dry weight of the nutritional composition. The composition is provided for improving the bioavailability of iron and preventing or treating of iron deficiency (anaemia), in particular for infants and young children or pregnant women. In another aspect of the invention, the nutritional compositions are for preventing cognitive disorders and/or socio- emotional disorders in an infant and/or young child.
