A photodynamic therapy (PDT) method to treat primary sites of hyperproliferative tissue and induce long term, tumor specific immunity for regression and eradication of distant metastases is disclosed. The improved treatment regimen comprises the partial or fractional application of PDT with several applications, spaced in time, to permit a patients immune system to react to dead tissue generated by each fractional application. Once activated, the immune system can help reduce or eliminate secondary stage tumors and metastasis stage tumors.
