The mechanism is intended for draining whey from a whey/curds mixture (16) and metering the curds for producing cheese. It comprises a mixture supply container (4), a draining column (1) with closed outer wall (2) and containing a perforated inner column (3) with its upper end connected with the container, a member (9) to cut portions of curds emerging from the column, a receptacle (5) for these portions, and means (10) to transport the portions to cheese moulds (13). The inner column which consists of a number of parallel perforated tubes (3) of which the size and shape of their cross-sections preferably correspond with these of the mould (13) cavities (14) is new.
