Monitoring the orientation of a joint for the creation of patient kinematic range data comprises: a joint orientation monitoring device； and a processor, in communication with said device, determining patient kinematic range data from joint orientation data. In another aspect, pre-operatively determining the suitability of a joint for a surgical corrective procedure using said joint orientation monitoring system comprises: determining S1000 a patients joint orientation 18 in a plurality of situations； determining S1100 a patients kinematic range 20 from said orientation data； comparing S1300 said determined kinematic range to a preferred kinematic range 22； and determining S1400 whether the joint is suitable for a first surgical corrective procedure 24 (e.g. a standard procedure) if the patient falls within the preferred kinematic range, or determining that the joint is suitable for a second surgical procedure 26 (e.g. an enhanced procedure). The joint orientation monitoring device may comprise a wearable portion with a plurality of accelerometers for sensing joint motion, a video capture device with depth-sensing means and a plurality of trackable markers, or a medical imaging technique such as x-ray, CT or MRI. The first or second procedure may be a joint arthroplasty.
