A device and method for registering a patients hip, wherein the device includes markers and positioning elements which can be placed on characteristic points of the hip, and once placed on characteristic points of the hip, data for registering the hip can be ascertained from the position of the markers. The method includes detecting the position of the markers arranged on the device and ascertaining data for registering the hip.
