PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a proliferation and differentiation promoter for hematopoietic cells useful for prophylaxis or improvement in anemia, leukopenia or deterioration of immunological competence due to medical or surgical diseases, medicines, etc. or medical symptoms caused by hematopoietic dysfunction and a food and drink containing the promoter added thereto. SOLUTION: An extracted essence of TOKYU (a resin secreted from the bark of a myrica) has a proliferation activity for T lymphocytes, is capable of promoting the proliferation and diffentiation of polyfunctional hematopoietec stem cells and recovering the reduction in the amounts of luekocytes, erythrocytes, hematocrits and hemoglobin due to the administration of an anticancer agent. The TOKYU used herein includes that derived from peaches of all the cultivable varieties and a David peach, e.g. a common peach (botanical name: Prunus persica Batsch var. vulgaris Maxim.) or varieties such as a nectarine (botanical name: Prunus persica Batsch var. nucipersica Shneid.) or a peento (botanical name: Prunus persica Batsch var. platycarpa L. H. Bailey) and further the David peach (botanical name: Prunus persica Batsch davidiana Maxim.) or a flowering plum (botanical name: Prunus triloba Lindl., 2n=6). All the TOKYU derived from the varieties is included herein.
