AÂ driver monitoring system 100 is provided having at least one camera 110 for monitoring the driver. A set of driver data is generated for identifying the position and/or movement of the driver 120. A controller is provided to select one of a plurality of operating modes 140, 150 for the driver assistance system based on the driver data. Optionally the operating modes can include (i) pre-charging a vehicle braking system, (ii) activation a vehicle safety system, (iii) altering course control setting, (iv) altering a lane departure warning setting and/or (v) adjusting settings of a climate control system. Preferably the camera 110 monitors a drivers head however the system may monitor if a driver has or is exiting a vehicle and then generate a transmission control signal to engage a transmission parking brake or transmission. The system 100 may include a driver notification system which may prioritise warning information.
