In an apparatus for the distillation of liquid, e.g. sea water, a stream of the water flows into a chamber 50 at reduced pressure where dissolved gases (air) are released from the water, the degasified water then flows through an evaporation unit 52 where part of the water evaporates under reduced pressure, the vapours being conducted into a condensation chamber 68 for desalinated water which is collected in receiver 72, the non-evaporated water leaving unit 52 flows as a high-velocity stream down barometric leg 54 to the sea, and the gases released in chamber 50 are drawn via conduit 74 into this high velocity stream. In unit 52, the water may flow down the sides of vertical plates. The sea water to be treated is pumped through conduit 40 and the tubes 43 of the condenser into a heater 46, and the stream of heated water flows through valve 48 into chamber 50. The heater 46 may be the condenser of a stream power plant. A certain amount of the dissolved gases are only released from the water near the bottom of unit 52, these gases flow with steam into condensation chamber 68, from which the gases are pumped through conduit 78 into barometric leg 54.
