A system for coating at least a portion of a plant seedling stem with a coating substance, comprising a plurality of spaced apart containers (30) for the coating substance, wherein the system comprises an industrial robot (10) with an end effector (11) comprising a support (21) with a plurality of spaced apart grippers (22) for gripping a plurality of spaced apart plant seedlings (29). The system further comprises a seedling stem aligning device (23) for positioning the seedling stems to be gripped in a common plane. The end effector (11) with the grippers (22) is movable between a picking position, a coating position and a discharge position. Disclosed is also a method for performing such coating.
