The present disclosure provides a method and system for generating living tissue configured to be folded into a predetermined three-dimensional shape. The present disclosure utilizes contractile cells to fold biological tissue into a three-dimensional shape. The method includes placing a pattern of contractile cells on a surface that includes fibers that are actuated by contractile cells and folding the surface by actuation of the contractile cells on the fibers. Also provided are tissues generated using the methods and systems of the present disclosure.
