PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform focus evaluation value scanning after a focus lens is moved by a prescribed movement amount before the focus evaluation value scanning is started.SOLUTION: Disclosed is an example in which the present focus position ○ is within the width of a prescribed movement amount W on the - side with respect to the previous position (inverted triangle). When an imaging switch is half-pushed, a focus lens is moved (M1) from the (double circle) position into the - direction by the prescribed movement amount W, the focus evaluation value at this position is set to a threshold L1, the movement direction is changed to the + side, and scanning (S1) of the focus evaluation value is started. If the focus evaluation value is less than the threshold L1 and the peak is detected, the scanning is stopped and the focus lens is moved (M2) to the peak position in the - direction.
