PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform a focus evaluation value scan by moving a focus lens by a predetermined amount of movement before the start of the focus evaluation value scan.SOLUTION: There is shown an example in which a focus position ○ applied this time is shifted to a minus side with respect to a previous position indicated by an inverted triangle in the figure within a width of a predetermined movement amount W. In response to a half press of an imaging switch, a focus lens is subjected to a movement M1 to the minus direction within the predetermined moving amount W from a position indicated by a double circle and a focus evaluation value detected at the position is set to a threshold L1, followed by changing the moving direction to a plus side to start a scan S1 for the focus evaluation value. It is shown that the evaluation value falls under the threshold L1 and the scan stops while detecting a peak, followed by making a movement M2 to the minus direction to reach the peak position. The act of focusing is completed by the above operation and a result thereof is confirmed by an examiner with the use of display or other means.
