PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple method for giving an aqueous potassium lactate solution having an improved organoleptic properties, and to provide a food product or a beverage product containing the aqueous potassium lactate solution. SOLUTION: The invention relates to a method for the preparation of a potassium lactate solution wherein a first potassium lactate solution having a potassium lactate concentration less than 65 wt.% is concentrated by evaporation to a solution having a potassium lactate concentration from 65 wt.% to 85 wt.%, and subsequently separated. The method wherein the evaporation is performed by a plate-type evaporation process in two steps, optionally in two distillation apparatuses and the evaporation is preceded or followed by treatment of the solution with active carbon is provided.
