Embodiments of screening methods for determining test agents effective formodifying theappearance of pigmented skin are provided. The screening method may comprisethe steps ofcontacting a cell, a cell culture, or bulk cells with the test agent, whereinthe cell, the cell culture,or the bulk cells comprise ADR.beta.1 receptors, and determining based on thebinding interaction ofthe test agent with the ADR.beta.1 receptors whether the test agent is aneffective ADR.beta.1 receptorantagonist suitable for modifying the appearance of pigmented skin, wherein atest agent isconsidered to be an effective ADR.beta.1 receptor antagonist when it defines ahalf maximalinhibitory concentration of less than about 1000 ppm.
