PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To meet the needs of various kinds of surfactants satisfying various performance requirements and the needs of proper methods for producing the surfactants. SOLUTION: The composition contains a surface active compound expressed by formula (I): ROCH2CH(OH)CR1R2ZCR1R2CH(OH)CH2OR (Z is S, SO or SO2) and has an equilibrium surface tension and/or dynamic surface tension falling within a specific range and a foaming property falling within a specific range according to specific definitions of Z, R, R1and R2. The compound of formula (I) can be produced by a process including the reaction of a sulfide source such as a metal sulfide or disulfide with an alkyl glycidyl ether.
