PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scanning type endoscope system capable of eliminating useless irradiation with light and obtaining endoscopic images of uniform brightness.SOLUTION: The scanning type endoscope system includes: an optical fiber for guiding illumination light to an emission end and emitting it to a subject an optical fiber scanning means for cyclically moving the emission end of the optical fiber so that the illumination light emitted from the emission end of the optical fiber cyclically scans a two-dimensional scanning area on the subject a light source control means for generating drive signals for driving the illumination light and ON/OFF controlling the illumination light on the basis of the drive signals an image signal detection means for receiving scattered light from the subject and detecting image signals at prescribed detection timing and an image generation means for allocating two-dimensional pixel positions corresponding to the detection timing of the image signals, arraying the image signals at the pixel positions and generating the endoscopic images.
