A method is provided for producing an in vitro or ex vivo method of producinga population of lineage committedhaematopoietic progenitor, or mature haematopoietic cells, other than cells ofthe neutrophil lineage, which method comprises thesteps of. (a) providing a population of cells comprising haematopoieticprogenitor cells and (b) culturing the population of cellsin an animal cell culture medium comprising one or more cytokines thatdifferentiate said progenitor cells into lineage committedhaematopoietic progenitor and/or mature haematopoietic cells, under conditionsof low oxidative stress, the culture medium beingagitated when the cells are at a cell density at which oxygen transfer via thesurface of the culture medium is insufficient for growthof the progenitor cells and the progeny thereof under static conditions, toproduce a population of lineage committed haematopoieticprogenitor, or mature haematopoietic cells, other than cells of the neutrophillineage. The resulting population of cells can be usedto increase the number of haematopoietic cells in a patient.
