A method is provided for producing an in vitro or ex vivo method of producing a populationof lineage committed haematopoietic progenitor, or mature haematopoieticcells, other than cells of the neutrophil lineage, which method comprises thesteps of: (a) providing a population of cells comprising haematopoietic progenitorcells and (b) culturing the population of cells in an animal cell culture mediumcomprising one or more cytokines that differentiate said progenitor cells intolineage committed haematopoietic progenitor and/or mature haematopoieticcells, under conditions of low oxidative stress, the culture medium being agitatedwhen the cells are at a cell density at which oxygen transfer via the surface ofthe culture medium is insufficient for growth of the progenitor cells and theprogeny thereof under static conditions, to produce a population of lineagecommitted haematopoietic progenitor, or mature haematopoietic cells, otherthan cells of the neutrophil lineage. The resulting population of cells can beused to increase the number of haematopoietic cells in a patient.
