PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a crosslinked polymer particle that is useful as an adsorbent/a processing material for processing a fluid containing a physiological substance, a cell and/or the like, has both a capability of adsorbing a causative substance of diseases and blood compatibility especially as an adsorbent for direct hemoperfusion and has a proportion of a polymerization unit containing nitrogen in the total polymerization units constituting the crosslinked polymer particle such that the proportion of the polymerization unit containing nitrogen at the surface of the particle is lower than the proportion of the polymerization unit containing nitrogen in the total polymerization units based on the total weight of the particle, and to provide a process for producing the crosslinked polymer particle.

SOLUTION: The crosslinked polymer particle comprises a vinyl alcohol unit and a polymerization unit containing nitrogen as the constituents wherein the nitrogen content in the dry weight of the particle as determined by the elemental analysis is in the range of 10.0-18.0 wt.% and the surface nitrogen concentration as determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis (XPS) is in the range of 3.0-9.5 at%.
