PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove protein aggregates and other plugging constituents from a protein solution.SOLUTION: A negatively charged microporous filtration medium 16 having a high charge density comprises a porous substrate and a polymerized cross-linked polymeric coating located on inner and outer surfaces of the substrate. The coating is formed from a reactant solution comprising negatively charged cross-linkable polymerizable acrylamidoalkyl monomers and acrylamido cross-linking agents which are polymerized in situ on the substrate.
