The invention relates to a method for controlling anorthopedic joint of a lower extremity in at least one degreeof freedom by means of an adjustable actuator for adjustingan orthopedic apparatus to walking situations that differfrom walking on a plane. Said orthopedic apparatus comprisestop connecting means to a limb and an orthopedic elementthat is hingedly arranged distal to the connecting means.The method encompasses the following steps:severalparameters of the orthopedic apparatus are sensed by meansof sensors; the sensed parameters are compared with criteriathat have been established based on several parametersand/or parameter curves and are stored in a computer unit; acriterion is selected that is suitable on the basis of thedetermined parameters and/or parameter curves; andresistances to movements, extents of movements, drivingforces, and/or the progresses thereof are adjusted inaccordance with the selected criterion in order to controlspecial functions that differ from walking on a plane.
