The present invention relates to a composition for preventing, alleviating, or treating depression and anxiety disorder containing an extract of Fraxinus rhynchophylla as an active component. More particularly, the present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition or a health functional food composition containing the extract of Fraxinus rhynchophylla as the active component, which is effective for depression or anxiety disorder. The extract of Fraxinus rhynchophylla according to the present invention exhibits effects of alleviating depressive behaviors and activity loss found in animal models, in which anxiety and depression have been caused, reducing a content of cortisol, and increasing a content of serotonin, as well as increasing the expression of pCERB, BDNF, and mBDNF proteins in hippocampus tissues, thereby being able to be usefully used for developing a health functional food or medicine for alleviating or treating depression and anxiety disorder.
