Mouth shield devices and methods for controlling flow and pressurization of air for maintaining a residual amount of positive expiratory pressure in the upper airways during the rest portion of the respiratory cycle and for restriction of nocturnal mouth breathing, and for strapless operation of oronasal, nasal or oral masks for CPAP treatment and for hands-free CPR treatment. Devices include a polymer piece creating a barrier between inside and outside regions of the mouth, and at least one one-way valve. Elastomeric valve elements are breath actuated and pressure-driven as the user breathes. The elastomeric valve elements open and expand as the user inhales to generate low resistance and high-volume airflow during inhalation, while sealing valve openings to reduce exhalation through the mouth and therefore promote nasal breathing.
