A solution in mater comprises N x (70 to 130) g/L polyethylene glycol (PEG) having an average molecular weight of 2500 to 4500 N x (1.6 to 4.0) g/L sodium chloride N x (0.2 to 0.6) g/L potassium chloride N x (0.6 to 2.2) g/L sodium bicarbonate and N x an amount of preservative where N is in the range 2 to 8. Preferably, the preservative is selected from the group including sodium propyl paraben, methyl paraben, ethyl paraben, propyl paraben, benzyl alcohol, phenoxyethanol, propylene glycol, glyceryl triacetate and blends of two or more thereof and is preferably present in an amount of N x (0.3 to 1.4) g/L. The formulation may optionally include N x (0.02 to 0.2) g/L sweeteners including acesulfame and/or sucralose and N x (0.2 to 2) g/L flavourings. The solution is a concentrate for dilution and is diluted N-fold with water to provide a solution for use in the treatment of constipation or faecal impaction.
