Various embodiments of sterilization or sterilization processing systems and components and associated operating methods are disclosed herein. For example, a sterilization or sterilization method includes immersing an article in an immersion fluid, and the immersed article is exposed to the hydrostatic pressure of the immersion fluid. The method also includes applying microwave energy to the article while the article is immersed in the immersion fluid and exposed to the hydrostatic pressure of the immersion fluid. The hydrostatic pressure of the immersion fluid prevents vapor explosion in the article due to the moisture content of the article while microwave energy is acting on the article. Further, the method includes heating the article immersed in the immersion fluid with the applied microwave energy to a target temperature sufficient to achieve sterilization or sterilization of the article.
