PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pivot paddle device for a suitable mammography / tomosynthesis X-ray system. A system includes an imaging system housing, an X-ray source for the imaging system housing, a compression arm assembly housing, a support, and a detector. A paddle is placed between the support and the X-ray source. The bottom surface of the paddle defines a plane, at least in part. When in the stationary position, the plane is substantially parallel to the support. A pivot mechanism connects the paddle to the compression arm assembly housing. The pivotal mechanism defines an axis of rotation that is substantially parallel to the patient's sagittal plane. The pivot mechanism has at least one urging element for urging the paddle to a stationary position.
