Disclosed are ophthalmic preparations useful for the effective prevention or treatment of irritation to corneal or conjunctival epithelial cells, particularly irritation due to causes other than infection, as measured by Lissamine Green staining. The formulation comprises an aqueous solution of glycerol. In other embodiments, the formulation may include additional ingredients including high molecular weight polymers for viscosity control and pharmacologically active substances.
