Ophthalmic preparations are described that are useful for the effective prevention or treatment of stimuli to cornea or conjunctival epithelial cells, particularly stimulation due to causes other than infection, as measured by lysamine green staining. The preparation includes an aqueous solution of glycerol. In other embodiments, the preparation may include additional ingredients including high molecular weight polymers and pharmacologically active materials for viscosity control.
