PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fluid ejection device which is suitable for the regulation of ejection operation of a fluid according to the state of contact of an ejection object with an ejection head, a method for driving the fluid ejection device, and a surgical instrument.SOLUTION: A fluid ejection device 1 comprises a fluid chamber 501, of which the volume is changeable, a volume changing portion 405 that changes the volume of the fluid chamber 501, a connection passage tube 200 that conveys pulsation from the fluid chamber 501 to a fluid ejection opening 212 in a head nozzle 211, a fluid supply pump 20, a first electrode 50 in which the nozzle 211 is a first contact portion 50a, a second electrode 51 having a second contact portion 51a applicable as a patch to an ejection object, an energization determination portion 30b that determines the energization state of the first electrode 50 and the second electrode 51, and a drive portion 30 that drives the volume changing portion 405. Meanwhile, in an energized state, the drive portion 30 regulates the volume changing portion 405 to be actuatable.
