The present invention provides a method of making a cat kibble having a density of about 350 to about 550 g / L, at least a) providing a kibble component comprising at least 2% of exogenous fat (% based on the total weight of the kibble component)； b) pre-cooking the kibble component at least partially in a preconditioner, wherein the component has a residence time of at least two minutes in the preconditioner； c) extruding at least partially pre-cooked kibble components in the extruder with a DSOR lower than a throughput of about 350 mm 2 .hT −1 ； d) drying the kibble extrudate produced in step c) to give the cat a kibble with excellent palatability.
