An esterified cellulose ether of increased weight average molecular weight is produced in a process for reacting a cellulose ether with an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid anhydride and a dicarboxylic acid anhydride, wherein the process comprises the steps of a) preparing a reaction mixture comprising the cellulose ether, the dicarboxylic acid anhydride and a reaction diluent and heating the reaction mixture to a temperature of from 60 C to 110 C prior to, during or after mixing the components of the reaction mixture, and b) adding continuously or in at least three portions the monocarboxylic acid anhydride to the reaction mixture of step a) and completing the reaction.L'invention concerne un éther de cellulose estérifié de poids moléculaire moyen plus élevé en poids, produit grâce à un procédé permettant de faire réagir un éther de cellulose avec un anhydride d'acide monocarboxylique aliphatique et un anhydride d'acide dicarboxylique, le procédé comprenant les étapes consistant à a) préparer un mélange de réaction comprenant l'éther de cellulose, l'anhydride d'acide dicarboxylique et un diluant de réaction, et chauffer le mélange réactionnel à une température comprise entre 60 °C et 110 °C avant, pendant ou après le mélange des constituants du mélange de réaction, et b) ajouter de façon continue ou en au moins trois fois l'anhydride d'acide monocarboxylique au mélange de réaction de l'étape a), et achever la réaction.
