PURPOSE:To obtain a safe plant-protecting substance having specific physical properties, capable of protecting plants from various plant pathogenic fungi by activating in vivo defense function of plants and hardly causing environmental pollution. CONSTITUTION:The objective protecting substance has the following physicochemical properties: Appearance, colorless crystal; molecular formula, C20H34O3; mass spectrum (FABMS), m/z 323 (M+H)<+>; melting point, 184 deg.C; specific rotation (measured in methanol solution at 1.0g/dl concentration) [alpha]<23>D+96.7 deg.; molecular absorption coefficient (epsilon) in maximum absorption wavelength lambdamax 215nm of ultraviolet ray absorption spectrum measured in a methanol solution, 2200; solubility, soluble in methanol, ethanol, ethyl acetate, acetone, dimethylsulfoxide and sparingly soluble in water, chloroform, n-hexane and diethyl ether. Furthermore, this substance is obtained by culturing a producing bacterium belonging to the genus Streptomyces (preferably Streptomyces sp. AB3951) and collecting from the resultant culture mixture.
