The sample changer is designed to enable different types of sample holder to be replaced. A computer is programmed to store and select individually optimized values for voltage, current and time intervals for the current in the electromagnet of the magnetic field generating device for each sample holder type so that the holder is securely attracted to the receptacle in a gripping and holding phase and is then demagnetized in a depositing phase.
