An intramedullary rod for use with a fastener (63) to repair a bone in a mammalian body comprises an elongate nail (62) extending along a longitudinal axis (66) and having a stem (69) and a head (67). The head has an aperture extending at an angle to the longitudinal axis and adapted to receive the fastener. A mechanism (101) is carried by the head for pivoting the fastener between first and second angle positions relative to the head. The head includes a proximal end and the mechanism includes a control element carried by the head and accessible at the proximal end of the head for causing the mechanism to pivot the fastener.
