The present invention relates to an apparatus for automatically milking an animal, comprising at least one teatcup having a teat entrance end (17a), and a movable arm (6, 40) for moving said teatcup towards a teat of an animal to be milked and attaching it thereto. According to the invention, the teat entrance end of said teatcup is arranged, while being moved by said movable arm (6, 40) towards said teat, to be held in relation to said movable arm (6, 40) at a level which is different from that of the teat entrance end (17a) of a further teatcup, when held in relation to said movable arm.Linvention concerne un appareil de traite automatique dun animal comprenant au moins un godet doté dune extrémité (17a) permettant lintroduction dun pis et un bras mobile (6, 40) permettant de déplacer le godet jusquau pis dun animal à traire et de ly attacher. Selon linvention, lextrémité dentrée du pis de ce godet est conçue de telle façon que, lorsquelle est approchée du pis par le bras mobile (6, 40), elle est tenue par rapport à ce bras mobile (6, 40) à un niveau différent de celui de lextrémité dentrée (17a) du pis dun autre godet lorsque ce dernier est maintenu par rapport à ce bras mobile.
