The composition comprises a pharmaceutical formulation that disintegrates in saliva and is configured to maintain a pH of 4 or less in saliva for the time it is dissolved in saliva. The formulation comprises a therapeutically effective amount of melatonin, a disintegrant, and an amount of acid sufficient to impart the pH to saliva in a carrier matrix.
