FIELD: biotechnology.SUBSTANCE: invention refers to biotechnology, namely to identification of a heterogeneous population of kidney cells suitable for providing a regenerative stimulus for the kidney, and treatment of human renal disease. Method comprises recovering cells from a mammalian kidney sample and exposing the sample of said recovered cells with labeled detection components, wherein each labeled detection component is targeted to a unique biomarker and marked with a unique label, wherein said detectable biomarkers are GGT-1, cytokeratin, VEGF and KIM-1. It is then determined whether GGT-1 expresses more than 4.5 % of said recovered cells in said heterogeneous population of kidney cells； whether cytokeratin expresses more than 80 % of said recovered cells in said heterogeneous population of kidney cells； and whether said isolated cells include said cells in said heterogeneous population of renal cell cells which express VEGF and KIM-1, thereby identifying said heterogeneous population of kidney cells.
