A method for treating a liquid medium containing organic waste by carrying out one or more liquid/solid separation steps (A) and optionally one or more physico-chemical treatment steps (B, C) on the medium to provide a medium containing no more than 20 g/l and preferably no more than 5 g/l of solids in suspension, and carrying out an ultra- or microfiltration step (E) on the resulting liquid medium to give a retentate and an ultra- or microfiltrate. An apparatus for treating a liquid medium containing organic waste, particularly pig manure, is also disclosed.
