PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composition and a method for extending the life of an individual and delaying the onset of age-related diseases. SOLUTION: A composition selected from the group consisting of oxaloacetate, oxaloacetate, oxaloacetate salt, α-ketoglutarate and aspartate, and a method of using an effective life-prolonging amount. The composition is preferably administered orally, topically, or parenterally. Beneficial effects include weight loss, improvement of cardiac function, prevention of skin aging, reduction of cancer occurrence, osteoporosis, bone loss, arthritis, cataract, macular degeneration and the like.
