The present invention relates to a composition for use in the treatment of intervertebral disc-related pain, wherein said composition comprises phenol, or a derivative thereof, as active ingredient. Intervertebral disc-related pain may be pain related to at least one of a cervical vertebra, a lumbar vertebra, a sacral vertebra and a coccygeal vertebra. Examples of intervertebral disc-related pain may be low back pain, chronic low back pain, neck pain, chronic neck pain and coccygodynia. The composition for use in the treatment of intervertebral disc-related pain may comprise phenol, capsaicin, o-cresol, picric acid, bisphenol A, nonylphenol, serotonin, 2,6-xylenol, thymol or salicylic acid, or a mixture thereof.
