The invention provides for a medical apparatus (100) for imaging a target volume (130) of a subject (106), comprising:- a coil arrangement (109) being configured to be disposed on the subject (106) and to receive signals from the subject;- a scanning sensor (110);- a scanning imaging system (121) being configured for acquiring image data from a predefined imaging zone (124) using the coil arrangement (109);- a memory (120) containing machine executable instructions (140);- a processor (116), wherein execution of the machine executable instructions (140) cause the processor (116) to:- acquire with the sensor (110) sensor data that can be used to generate a of the subject (106) and the coil arrangement;- identify coil image data representing the coil (109) in the sensor data (142);- determine values of one or more configuration parameters of the coil (109) using the identified coil image data;- determine using the parameter values and the sensor data (142) a scan position indicative of a position of the target volume (130) within the imaging zone (124); and- control the scanning imaging system (121) for acquiring the image data from the target volume (130) in accordance with the determined scan position.
