A surgical retractor blade assembly for retraction of soft tissue during surgery is disclosed. The assembly comprises at least one support member having a proximal end and a distal end and a retractor blade having a distal end and a proximal end and adapted to detachably engage the at least one support member. The distal end of each support member includes a formation which enables anchorage of the distal end of the support member to anatomy of a patient and freedom for the proximal end of the support member and attached blade to undergo manual displacement.
