This method of producing a polymerisate suitable for preparing dimeric fatty acids by molecular distillation from this polymerisate is based on the catalytic polymerisation of a mixture of fatty acids containing 65 to 97 parts by weight of monoenoic and/or dienoic fatty acids, mainly fatty acids of non erucic rapeseed oil and/or refinery fatty acids, 0.5 to 2.5 parts by weight of water, and 2 to 8 parts by weight of a catalyst based on bentonite. The polymerisation is performed at a temperature of 250 to 270 degrees C, the pressure in the reaction zone increases during the reaction at least to 1 MPa. The termination of the polymerisation is indicated by achieving a viscosity of at least 160 mPa.s (at 40 degrees C after removing the catalyst). Then it is cooled to 100 to 200 degrees C and filtration, or possibly a further decrease of the pressure to remove volatile parts.
