Recovery of xylose from pentose-rich solns. obtd. by acid hydrolysis of pentosan-contg. materials is effected by (a) filtering off suspended solids, (b) deionising the filtrate, (c) decolorising the soln. and removing residual organic impurities, e.g. by treatment with an ion-exchange resin or activated charcoal, and (d) subjecting the soln. to ion-exchange chromatography. The starting material for prodn. of the pentose-rich soln. can be wood, corn cobs, nut shells, straw, etc. Step (d) is pref. effected by passing the soln. (solids content 25-55 wt.%) through a column of sulphonated styrene/divinylbenzene resin in alkaline earth metal form at a rate of 0.2-1.5 cubic m/hr per square m of column cross section. High-purity xylose can be crystd. from the eluate. The process is suitable for operation on a commercial scale and yields xylose of sufficient purity for direct conversion to xylitol.
