It is a device used for one hand needle aspiration biopsy. Needle aspiration biopsy is a method used to initially get tissue sample from most superficially accessible nodules located in the thyroid gland, the breast or any part of the body suspected of being malignant. Commonly used instrument is the 100cc plastic syringe with gauge 21 or 19 needle. The attached needle is sticked into the nodule and a negative pressure is created in the barrel of the syringe by pulling the plunger. With the negative pressure, the needle is played with a to and fro strokes inside the nodule until an adequate tissue sample is seen coming into the barrel. The negative pressure is then released by letting the plunger slowly back into its original position before pulling the needle out of the nodule. The tissue samples are then submitted to the pathologist.
