The invention relates to a method and a system for detecting the presence of an invasive device and for verifying the necessity of the invasive device, in particular a venous or urinary catheter, intended to be placed on a patient (P) in a room ( 1) and comprising an associated label, the label being not detectable before the installation of the device. The method comprises the steps of: providing, in the room, at least one radio-identification reader (4) with a detection zone (ZD) of the defined tag so that it can detect the presence of the tag ； make the label detectable automatically by the usual placement of the invasive device on the patient； detect, by the reader, a first presence of the label； send data concerning the first presence of the tag to a server connected to the reader； storing, in the server, the data concerning the first presence of the label, data concerning the patient and the date and time of the first presence； and check, by the server, the need for the presence of the invasive device on the patient.
