Disclosed is a method of producing a rabies virus like particle (VLP) in plant comprising: a) introducing s nucleic acid comprising a native rabies glycoprotein into the plant or portion thereof b) incubating the plant or portion of the plant to permit expression, thereby producing the rabies VLP c) harvesting the plant, d) extracting the VLPs, wherein the VLPs range in size from 40-300 nm and, wherein the VLP comprises a lipid obtained from a plasma membrane of the plant. Also disclosed are related compositions and methods of inducing immunity to rabies in a subject.
